Olmesartan Medoxomil

Brand and Other Names: Benicar
Mechanism of Action:
Angiotensin II is formed from angiotensin I in a reaction catalyzed by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE, kininase II). Angiotensin II is the principal pressor agent of the renin-angiotensin system, with effects that include vasoconstriction, stimulation of synthesis and release of aldosterone, cardiac stimulation and renal reabsorption of sodium. Olmesartan blocks the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle. Its action is, therefore, independent of the pathways for angiotensin II synthesis. See package insert for complete information.
Indications:
• Benicar is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) indicated for the treatment of hypertension, alone or with other antihypertensive agents, to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.
Route: Oral
Dose:
• Benicar may be administered with or without food. • If blood pressure is not controlled by Benicar alone, a diuretic may be added. Benicar may be administered with other antihypertensive agents. See package insert for complete information.
Adverse Reactions:
The most common adverse reaction in adults was dizziness (3%).
Contraindication:
None.
Warnings and Precautions:
• Avoid fetal (in utero) exposure. • Children <1 year of age must not receive Benicar for hypertension. • Observe for signs and symptoms of hyp otension in volum e- or salt-depleted patients with treatment initiation. • Monito r for worsening renal function in patients with renal impairment.
See package insert for full prescribing information.
