lipiodol
Lipiodol opacifies vessels and body structures in the path of the flow of the contrast medium, permitting visualization of the internal structures.
LIPIODOL is an oil-based radiopaque contrast agent approved for:
- Hysterosalpingography in adults
- Lymphography in both adults and pediatric patients
- Selective hepatic intra-arterial imaging of tumors in adults with known hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
Adults:
- unilateral lymphography of the upper extremities 2 to 4 mL
- unilateral lymphography of the lower extremities 6 to 8 mL
- penile lymphography 2 to 3 mL
- cervical lymphography 1 to 2 mL
Pediatric patients:
- Inject a minimum of 1 mL to a maximum of 6 mL according to the anatomical area to be visualized. Do not exceed 0.25 mL/kg.
General
-
Hypersensitivity, embolisms, liver dysfunction, thyroid disorders, fever, nausea, abdominal pain
By Indication
- Hysterosalpingography: Pain, infection exacerbation, peritonitis
- Lymphography: Edema, dermatitis, lymphedema worsening
- Hepatic Injection: Thrombosis, liver enzyme elevation, vomiting
General: Hypersensitivity, hyperthyroidism, trauma, recent bleeding
Hysterosalpingography: Pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical erosion, etc.
Lymphography: Cardiac shunt, pulmonary disease, lymphatic surgery or damage
Hepatic injection: Dilated bile ducts (unless externally drained)
Pulmonary and Cerebral Embolism
- Serious or fatal embolisms possible from improper injection.
- Avoid in patients with lung or heart impairment.
Hypersensitivity Reactions
- Risk of anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions, especially in patients with allergies or asthma.
- Requires availability of resuscitation-trained personnel and emergency treatment setup.
Chronic Liver Disease
-
May worsen portal hypertension, hepatic failure, or hepatic ischemia.
Thyroid Dysfunction
- May cause hypo- or hyperthyroidism.
- Monitor thyroid function post-administration, especially in pregnant or breastfeeding women and infants.
