ibuprophen

Brand and Other Names: ADVIL
Mechanism of Action:
Indications:

Temporarily relieves minor aches and pains due to:

  • Headache
  • Toothache
  • Backache
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Common cold
  • Muscular aches
  • Minor pain of arthritis

Also temporarily reduces fever.

Route: oral
Dose:

Adults & children 12+: 1 capsule every 4–6 hours while symptoms persist. If symptoms don’t respond to 1 capsule, 2 may be used.

Maximum: Do not exceed 6 capsules in 24 hours unless directed by a doctor.

Children under 12: Ask a doctor.

Stomach problems (e.g., heartburn)

High blood pressure, heart disease, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, asthma, or past stroke

Are taking a diuretic

History of side effects from pain relievers

Warnings and Precautions:

Allergy Alert

  • Severe allergic reactions possible, especially if allergic to aspirin.
  • Symptoms: hives, facial swelling, asthma, shock, skin reddening, rash, blisters.

Stomach Bleeding Warning

Risk increases if:

  • Over 60 years old
  • Prior ulcers or bleeding issues
  • Using blood thinners or steroids
  • Using other NSAIDs
  • Consuming ≥3 alcoholic drinks daily
  • Exceeding recommended dose or duration

Heart Attack and Stroke Warning

  • NSAIDs (except aspirin) may increase risks.
  • Higher risk with excessive or prolonged use.
