Sucralfate

Brand and Other Names: Sucralfate
Mechanism of Action:

Sucralfate acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract by forming an ulcer-adherent complex that protects the ulcer site from acid, pepsin, and bile salts.

Indications:

Indicated for short-term treatment (up to 8 weeks) of active duodenal ulcer.

Route: oral
Dose:

1 g (10 mL) four times daily on an empty stomach.

Adverse Reactions:

Most common: Constipation (2%)

Others (<0.5%): Diarrhea, dry mouth, gastric discomfort, nausea, rash, dizziness, headache

Contraindication:

Sucralfate oral suspension is contraindicated for patients with known hypersensitivity reactions to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

Warnings and Precautions:

Route Warning: Do not administer intravenously – associated with fatal embolic complications.

Use with Caution:

  • Pregnant or pediatric patients

    • Patients with chronic renal failure due to aluminum accumulation risk

    • Diabetics – may cause episodes of hyperglycemia
