bismuth subsalicylate

Brand and Other Names: bismuth subsalicylate
Mechanism of Action:
Indications:

Relieves upset stomach due to overindulgence in food or drink

Controls diarrhea

Route: oral
Dose:

2 tablespoons (30 mL), repeat every 0.5 to 1 hour as needed

Adverse Reactions:

A temporary but harmless, darkening of the stool and/or tongue may occur

Reye's Syndrome Warning

  • Do not use in children or teenagers recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms unless directed by a doctor, due to risk of Reye's syndrome.

Allergy Alert

  • Contains salicylates. Avoid use if allergic to salicylates (including aspirin) or taking other salicylate products.

Do Not Use If:

  • You have bloody or black stools
  • You have an ulcer or a bleeding problem
