escitalopram

Brand and Other Names: escitalopram
Mechanism of Action:

SSRI – selectively inhibits serotonin reuptake

Indications:

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

  • Adults and pediatric patients ≥12 years

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

  • Adults

Route: oral
Dose:

Adults (MDD or GAD) - 10 mg/day

Pediatric ≥12 years (MDD) - 10 mg/day

Adverse Reactions:

Insomnia

Ejaculatory delay

Nausea

Increased sweating

Fatigue

Somnolence

Decreased libido

Anorgasmia

Contraindication:

Concurrent use with MAOIs (within 14 days)

Concurrent use with linezolid or IV methylene blue

Use with pimozide

Hypersensitivity to escitalopram or citalopram

Warnings and Precautions:

Serotonin Syndrome

Discontinuation Syndrome

Seizures (caution in those with a seizure history)

Activation of Mania/Hypomania

Hyponatremia

Increased Risk of Bleeding (especially with NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin)

Cognitive and Motor Impairment
