barium sulfate
Due to its high atomic number, barium (the active ingredient in E-Z-HD) is opaque to x-rays and therefore acts as a positive contrast agent for radiographic studies.
E-Z-HD is indicated for double-contrast radiographic examinations of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum to visualize the GI tract in patients aged 12 years and older.
Adults and patients ≥12 years: 65 mL to 135 mL (equivalent to 155 g to 321 g of barium sulfate).
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps.
Known/suspected GI perforation or obstruction
High risk of aspiration
Known hypersensitivity to barium sulfate or ingredients
Pediatric patients with tracheo-esophageal fistula
Hypersensitivity reactions: include bronchospasm, rash, and hypotension. Emergency support should be available.
Barium leakage: Avoid in patients with GI perforation risk (e.g., ulcers, diverticulitis).
Obstruction risk: Especially in those with GI motility issues or elderly. Hydration and laxatives recommended.
Aspiration pneumonitis: Avoid in patients with swallowing issues. Begin with small dose if necessary.
Systemic embolization: Rare, but possible.
Hereditary fructose intolerance: Risk due to sorbitol content.
