gadoxetate disodium

Brand and Other Names: EOVIST
Mechanism of Action:

Gadoxetate disodium is a paramagnetic compound and develops a magnetic moment when placed in a magnetic field. The relatively large magnetic moment produced by gadoxetate disodium results in a local magnetic field, yielding enhanced relaxation rates (shortening of relaxation times) of water protons in the vicinity of the paramagnetic agent, which leads to an increase in signal intensity (brightening) of blood and tissue.

Indications:

OVIST is a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) used in MRI of the liver to detect and characterize lesions in patients with known or suspected focal liver disease.

Route: intravenous
Dose:

0.1 mL/kg body weight (equivalent to 0.025 mmol/kg).

Adverse Reactions:

Nausea

Headache

Feeling hot

Dizziness

Back pain

Contraindication:

Severe hypersensitivity to EOVIST.

Warnings and Precautions:

ntrathecal Use (Not Approved)

  • Intrathecal administration can cause death, coma, seizures, encephalopathy.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)

  • Risk is highest in patients with:

    • GFR < 30 mL/min/1.73m²

    • Acute kidney injury

  • Screen high-risk patients for renal impairment and avoid use unless essential.

Other Warnings

  • Hypersensitivity reactions: Monitor for symptoms (most occur within 30 minutes).
