Brand and Other Names: ertapenem
Mechanism of Action:

Ertapenem sodium is a carbapenem antibiotic

Indications:

Ertapenem is a penem-class antibiotic approved for use in adults and pediatric patients (≥3 months). It's indicated for treating moderate to severe infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Route: intravenous or intramuscular
Dose:

Adults: 1 g once daily (IV/IM)

Children (3 months – 12 years): 15 mg/kg twice daily (max 1 g/day)

Adverse Reactions:

Diarrhea

Nausea

Headache

Infusion site complications

Contraindication:

Known hypersensitivity to beta-lactams or components of the formulation

IM use is contraindicated in patients allergic to amide-type local anesthetics (e.g., lidocaine)

Warnings and Precautions:

Severe hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis

Seizure risk, especially in those with CNS disorders or renal impairment

Interaction with valproic acid/divalproex may lower serum levels, increasing seizure risk

C. difficile-associated diarrhea: Can range from mild to life-threatening

Drug-resistant bacteria: Avoid inappropriate or prolonged use
