neomycin sulfate, polymyxin b sulfate and bacitracin zinc ointment

Brand and Other Names: NEOMYCIN AND POLYMYXIN B SULFATES AND BACITRACIN ZINC-
Mechanism of Action:

Neomycin: Aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis.

Polymyxin B: Disrupts bacterial membranes, particularly effective against gram-negative bacteria.

Bacitracin: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Indications:

Indicated for topical treatment of superficial infections of the external eye and its adnexa.

Route: topical
Dose:

Apply every 3–4 hours for 7–10 days to the affected eye(s), depending on severity.

Adverse Reactions:

Allergic sensitization (itching, swelling, redness).

Contraindication:

Neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and bacitracin zinc ophthalmic ointment is contraindicated in individuals who have shown hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Warnings and Precautions:

Do not inject into the eye or introduce into the anterior chamber.

May cause cutaneous sensitization—watch for rash, itching, redness, or edema.

Prolonged use may lead to fungal or resistant bacterial overgrowth.

Cross-reactivity possible with other aminoglycosides (e.g., gentamicin).

Keep the applicator tip sterile—contamination can lead to serious ocular infections
